1997 jetta lacks power

Runs rough, stalls,no power,
While in 1st gear, while driving, no power-car dies; Starts up every time;

Is there steady check engine light coming up on dash.

If YES.
Then get the vehicle scanned to retrieve error codes.

Other possibility for these problems:----

Such problems are  caused due to simple build-up of gunk in the throttle body. Try removing the throttle body and cleaning it thoroughly, with carb cleaner or something similar. Just cleaning the front usually doesn't do the trick. You want to make it shiny clean, looking like new inside, front and back. When you're done and have re-installed it, you should do a "Throttle Adaptation"

When you are doing this, disconnect the battery for about 5 minuets. Be sure to clean behind the throttle plate.
Properly check for oil in the intake hose from the air mass meter if present the clean the air mass meter and hose.
If these do not work then you may need to replace the throttle body assembly.

OTHER POSSIBILITIES FOR SUCH PROBLEMS:-----

It can be air or a vacuum leak. This is very common.
To confirm these problem simple test !

Open the hood and listen for a hissing sound when the engine is running.

Actually what happens is ...................
Un-metered air can enter the engine through a vacuum leak, a dirty airflow sensor that is not reading airflow accurately, an EGR valve is not closing and is leaking exhaust into the intake manifold, an EGR valve that is allowing too much flow.
If it is hard to pinpoint, then another easy but little bit risky method to confirm the issue ..............

take some brake cleaner or starting fluid around the intake manifold and vacuum lines and see if the engine stumbles or if the idle is affected. Be extremely careful when doing this!

As previously mentioned the issue indicates problem with throttle body
Also, carbon layer gor collected on throttle body and need to be cleaned! This can cause all sorts of idle and hesitation problems. This is caused by the throttle plate not seating properly.
So on these case,at our auto garage ,the First thing i would do is clean out the throttle body with some throttle plate and intake cleaner and a small brush.
Another common cause would be the Idle Air Control motor. This is very common on older cars. The IAC motor gets dull/loose and cant keep up with the fast idle changes. Also when the IAC motor is out, I rec to check the passages for carbon build up. If they are plugged they need to be cleaned out.

Check for the following conditions:
These will pinpoint you towards the problem:-------------------

  • Poor connection at PCM or IAC motor: To confirm these case ,inspect harness connectors for backed out terminals, improper mating, broken locks, improperly formed or damaged terminals, and poor terminal to wire connection.
  • Damaged harness: To confirm these case, inspect the wiring harness for damage.

  • Restricted air intake system: To confirm these case,Properly check for a possible collapsed air intake duct, restricted air filter element, or foreign objects blocking the air intake system.
  • Throttle body: To confirm these case. You need to check for objects blocking the IAC passage or throttle bore, excessive deposits in the IAC passage and on the IAC pintle, and excessive deposits in the throttle bore and on the throttle plate. Check for a sticking throttle plate. Also inspect the IAC passage for deposits or objects which will not allow the IAC pintle to fully extend. First always try cleaning the valve and sensors.f its not helping, then only you need to replace the parts.
  • Vacuum leak: To confirm these case. You need to check for a condition that causes a vacuum leak, such as disconnected or damaged hoses, leaks at EGR valve and EGR pipe to intake manifold, leaks at throttle body, faulty or incorrectly installed PCV valve, leaks at intake manifold brake booster hose disconnected, oil filler cap, oil level indicator loose or missing, etc..

If you go for replacing parts, please replace old faulty parts by branded parts.Branded parts give accurate performance and last long.

At our Auto garage for same problem lack of power problem with my TDI--1997 Jetta. It turned out to be the intake plugged with carbon.

It can also be a possibility of faulty MAF sensor.

To confirm these ...................pull the plug on your MAF see if it'll rev to 5000rpm.

If RPM gets better without MAF,then its most possibly faulty MAF.

These details will help.
Thanks.
