Engine Swap

PT cruiser Engine swap

Need to swap an engine to a 2002 pt cruiser, the engine that is from a 2001 pt cruiser.
I been reading about it and they supposed to be compatible but the one I got has the crank sensor on front intend of on the back by the oil filter...would this affect in order for the car to run?
cruiser engine
I don't want to start the swap and find out later that it wont run because of it.
Every thing else seem to be the same I'm going to use every thing else from the old engine like sensors, intake, etc

Vehicle details are as follows:-------

Country: United States
Make (manufacturer): Chrysler
Model: pt cruiser
Year: 2002
Engine (optional): 2.4

READ THE SOLUTION FOR THIS HERE:
There are numerous engine swap kits available in automotive part market.
This kits are famously names as miata engine swap, honda engine swap, jeep engine swap, subaru engine swap, cruiser engine swap kits ...
But in your case ..........

This engine wouldn't start and run in your car. I've seen countless people that have actually installed the engine only to find later that it won't run.YES, it will not run.

The reasons why this engine swap will not work:

The older PT Cruisers had an SBEC powertrain control module and the 2003 and later cars had an NGC controller. The NGC and SBEC controllers use a different tone wheel pattern for the cam and crank sensors to run off of. The cam tone wheel is a magnet on the end of the intake cam, the crank sensor runs off a metal wheel with notches on the crankshaft itself.

FOR YOUR INFO:

The crank sensor is on the rear of the block on the 2001 and 2002 SBEC engines and these are interchangeable. When the change to NGC was made for 2003 the tone wheel was moved to a different location on the crank, and that's when the sensor was relocated to the front of the block and closer to the trans.

DETAILS ABOUT YOUR ENGINE:

The engine that you were sold is actually a 2003 or newer NGC engine if it has the crank sensor on the front. If you were to install this one it wouldn't start even if you could get the crank sensor plugged in. The controller won't recognize the tone wheel pattern so it won't start. If you unplug the cam sensor it will eventually start with a long crank time, but it will have a 2,500 RPM rev limiter.

Since the crankshafts and blocks are different between the two there really isn't a way to make this engine work correctly in your car. What you'll want to do is return that to where it came from and get the correct engine, which will have the crank sensor in the same place as yours.

FOR YOUR HELP I SUGGEST:

As far as interchange this is all you really need to be aware of. As long as the crank sensor is in the same spot then it's the right engine.

I would try to find out how many miles are on the replacement engine if you can. If it's in the 75,000 or up range I would replace the timing belt and water pump before the engine goes in. As per service manual its scheduled to be replaced at 100,000 and it would save 4-6 hours of work later on if you replaced them before the engine went in. You don't want to install the engine and then have the timing belt break shortly there after and have to take it all back apart.

OTHER BASICS TO LOOK BEFORE ENGINE IS INSTALLED

Plugs and wires are a common item on these too. When installing a used engine I would either replace them with new ones, or if yours were ok just swap them over. Here again you don't want to have it all back together and have to pull the plenum back off to replace the plugs and wires.

This details will help.
Thanks.
