TRANSMISSION OVERTEMP ON JEEP CHEROKEE


2006 Jeep grand Cherokee engine no start and all the lights on dash lit up message reporting Transmission overtemp


Troubleshooting:

Transmission overtemp issue is usually caused by a bad transmission lead plate. 

Transmission Lead Plate:

On the top of the valve body in the transmission is the lead plate, which is what makes all electrical connection between solenoids, speed sensors and the range sensor. The range sensor is what tells the transmission control module (TCM) the position that the shifter is in. 
The wiring harness plugs into the lead plate on the right front of the trans and then all the signals, inputs and outputs are wired to the transmission control module (TCM).


Signal To The Transmission Lead Plate:

The range sensor signal and transmission temperature signal go through the same circuit on the lead plate depending on what position the shifter is in, this is done to lower complexity and costs. In some shifter positions the TCM will see temperature on the circuit, in some positions it will see gear position.


NO TEMPERATURE SIGNAL ISSUE:

On some cases like this circuit on the lead plate opens up. This causes the TCM to not be able to see the temperature signal, so the trans overtemp message comes on the dash.

Why Engine Will Not Start Due To Trans Overtemp?

At the same time it won't be able to determine shifter position, and since it has to see that you are in park and neutral for the starter to crank, you won't be able to start the engine.

Repairing For Transmission Overtemp:

The repair is to replace the lead plate, which isn't a major repair. The pan is removed and valve body dropped and then the lead plate can be removed from the top of it. The repair takes about an hour.


Can It Be Starter Failure Issue?
The key is that the technician knows that when the starter has no cranking you were also seeing the transmission over temperature message. The temperature message is what confirms that the problem is in the lead plate rather than being related to the starter, it's wiring, ignition switch, key, etc.
